I'm Halfway Done Through College.... What?!

Adjustment Period

I can say that one of my strengths is the ability to adapt well to a new environment as having to move from several various places while I was growing up. I usually always see the positive aspects of change and can see the goodness that will come from a brand new surrounding. However, whether it was a move from one country to another or to one city to another, a move still gives me butterflies in my stomach. The new rules, changes, challenges, and opportunities have all been crucial components of my adjustment here in Washington, D.C.

The lifestyle in Washington, D.C. is quite different from the California lifestyle. The environment is more fast-paced and definitely busier. It was hard to get used to it at first. The dress code in D.C. which I have learned is business professional is extremely different from what you would typically see in California – especially in Southern California schools like University of San Diego where girls in shorts, flip flops, and bathing suits is the norm. A change in a scenery and environment to me is extremely refreshing. There are so many places to learn about and explore. Washington, D.C. is the hub of studies in political science and international relations. Just being in the city for a few weeks has allowed me to new opportunities to learn about my areas of interest. Last week, I was able to hear the discussion by the United States Institute of Peace’s (USIP) “When is International Peacekeeping Illegal.” It was a very interesting speaker event where I learned a lot regarding the topic and was amazed at how accessible these events are.

My living situation is also a big adjustment for me. I am living in Northern Virginia with my dad who is also working in D.C. It is a big change from living independently on my own eight hours away from home in San Diego. Also, I have not lived in the same house as my dad since I was about fourteen years old as he was either living in the Philippines or in Washington, D.C. due to his job. It is a very different living situation that I have been used to, but it is also a great way for me and my dad to spend more time and catch up for lost time in the past years.

Some challenges that I have faced included having a delay in the clearance of my background check. My internship supervisor informed me that there seemed to be a backlog with the system. Thankfully, my background check was cleared this afternoon after waiting for about three weeks. I will be beginning my first day of work on Monday, and my first full day will be on Tuesday, September 14^th.

During my stay here in Washington, I believe that I will have to build relationships with my co-workers, my internship supervisors, and my other TWC interns in order to succeed. I feel that my relationships with those in my work place, in class, and the connections that I will build through this program will be all part of a holistic experience.

Very Long Hiatus

Wow, summer definitely flew by! I apologize for the extremely long hiatus during my summer vacation. I haven't posted a blog over the summer, but I will definitely keep this updated more frequently now that a new adventure is ahead of me! I am in Washington, D.C., one of the most exciting and powerful cities in the world! I will be doing an internship program through The Washington Center (http://www.twc.edu) wherein I will be interning full-time at the Peace Corps office in D.C., taking a course called "Peaceful Solutions: An Alternative to Violence," completing a Civic Engagement Project, participating in Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill, visiting embassies and international organizations, and exploring this vibrant city. I've got a busy semester ahead of me, but I'm ready for it!

Easter Break

#382 reason why I love USD? We get Easter Break!!!! So it's basically spring break part dos. We get Thursday until Monday off! My last class on Wednesday ends at 10am, so after that my Easter break has officially begun! A couple of my professors cancelled my class today, so that's an extra day too! So stoked about that!

For Easter break, I decided to stay in San Diego. A lot of my friends specially those from the east coast and Hawaii ended up staying. Some friends who were from California like me just decided to stay and enjoy SD! It was pretty relaxing, and I was able to explore other places in San Diego, like Balboa Park. I also got to see friends who visited from out of town who visited because they were on Spring break.

Overall, it was a great Easter break! I woke up today and realized we only have less than two months until the end of this semester and the end of my second year here at USD! I've probably said this before in my other blogs like a hundred times, but time sure does fly! April is going to be a busy month with deadlines for papers, various philantrophy and sports events put on by various fraternities and sororities, Associated Student government elections, and upcoming this week is Theta-Delts Social Event with a theme of "Woodstock and Hardrock!" I will post pictures from the event next time! :)

Theta Moms Weekend

I haven't seen my mom since I left at the beginning of the semester, so I was excited to see her. My sorority had planned events for the weekend including a day at Coronado for some activities and pastries (except I couldn't enjoy them since I gave it up for Lent.... ONE more week!) and a Harbor Brunch Cruise around San Diego. My mom and I had so much fun at the brunch cruise with all my Theta sisters and their moms that we are all already looking forward to next year's Theta moms brunch cruise! We are also hoping to have a family dinner cruise the next time my dad and sister comes and visit me here. It was a nice and relaxing weekend after the long nights of skits practices and Greek Week. I cannot stress how having a kitchen this year has made life sooooo much better! I never really cooked and baked much when I was still living at home in high school. But I missed home-cooked meals and baking cupcakes and cookies occasionally when I lived in freshman housing last year. Now, I love how my apartment gives me the advantages of living on campus and having my own kitchen for home-cooked meals and such. I love inviting my friends over and for dinners too!

After dinner, I had to go to my weekly Residence Hall Association (RHA) Executive Board meeting. Today is also one of the exec board members' birthday. Happy Birthday, Mike! I brought along some cupcakes for our meeting as we planned for our events for this semester. After the meeting, I met up with some friends for some Mardi Gras festivities. (Well nothing big) We just went over to our friends' apartment at the Vistas (Sophomore Housing) to bring them cupcakes. Yes, I made a ton of cupcakes! Haha. We just hung out and ate the box of chocolates from one of my friend's roommates. I had to take advantage of the cookies and cupcakes since I gave up cookies, cakes, brownies, and chips for Lent. It's not all desserts. It's too hard to give up chocolates and fro-yo!

Sorority Recruitment was a great experience. We met our Ro Chi leader and our group on Tuesday night. The Ro Chi's are there to basically help us through recruitment week and be a resource person. They were completely unbiased and had to be unaffiliated from their chapter for recruitment week. The first day, Wednesday, was a full day where we had to visit all six chapters. Each day after the first day, we visited less chapters, and each chapter focused on a different aspect of their sorority. For the second and third days, the chapters focused on philantrophy and sisterhood. On the fourth day, we were asked to a maximum of two chapters for pref night, and we had to ranked the two chapters in order at the end of the day.

I had been anxious all week and just wanted to fast-forward to Sunday which was Bid Day. The day finally arrived, and we all met at UC Forums full of thrilled and exhilarated girls who were all very eager to open their individual envelopes with a bid from their future chapters. I opened my envelope and saw a bid from Kappa Alpha Theta in black and gold letters and ribbons. I got even more excited as several girls from my own Ro Chi group also got bids from Theta! Bid day was so fun as I met a lot of the girls in the chapter. We went on a harbor cruise around San Diego, ate dinner at Buca Di Bepo downtown, and got some frozen yogurt for dessert. The day was absolutely fun-filled, and I cannot wait to make more memories with the girls in my sorority!

Winter Break

Winter Break is almost over! My break was extremely relaxing. I definitely needed some downtime after all the stressful and brain-draining final exams! My family went to the Philippines for a few weeks to visit some family. It was my grandma's 75th birthday, and my mom and aunts planned a surprise birthday party for her. We also toured many places and of course ate so much food!

I absolutely love traveling, and I cannot wait to study abroad! I am looking into studying abroad this summer at the Guadalajara Program in Mexico or the program in Jamaica! 20th Birthday/Pre-Finals Week

Time flies! I'm twenty years old and fall semester is almost over!!!

For my birthday, I went to dinner at Casa Guadalajara in Old Town with some friends. My birthday was on the last day of classes for the fall semester. My friends and I definitely wanted a fun night before we our dreaded finals! Here's some photos from the night:

I love my finals week schedule. Somehow I ended up having one final per day which is really nice! Our finals week is from December 16th - 22nd. Our last day of class was the 14th, and we have the 15th as our "study day." I love having a study day because we don't go straight from last day of class to the first day of finals. It also gives us some time to de-stress and take a deep breath before practically moving into the library. This year I think I spent almost every night studying at the library until 4:00 a.m! Founders Club at Nazareth House - Part Two

As I've mentioned in my last blog, Founders Club went to bring the Christmas cards we made and sang Christmas Carols at the Nazareth House. Several of us came out and we had tons of fun! We were able to meet more of the senior residents at Nazareth House and also their families who attended their Christmas Party. I'm definitely looking forward to more events next semester!

Community service and volunteering is an important part of my life. Every since I was young, I have always been really passionate about helping others. One of the reasons why I decided to attend USD was because of the immense amount of opportunities for service projects and community service activities. There are tons of community service clubs on campus - Invisible Children, STAND, Romero Center, University Ministry, and more!

One that I am the most involved in is USD's Founders Club where I am on the executive board as publicity/recruitment chair. An activity that we do at least every other week is spending a Saturday afternoon at Nazareth House with senior citizens. The last time we went, we played cards and board games with them. Everyone - both USD students and the senior citizens - had a great time and enjoyed themselves! I have been planning a Founders Club Christmas card making/holiday party, and it will be held this Thursday. We will be making Christmas cards for the senior citizens at Nazareth House while enjoying some pizza and yummy treats (pumpkin pie and holiday cookies!) We will be bringing the Christmas cards this Saturday when we go to the Nazareth House, and we will also be singing Christmas carols to them! I will be posting a blog about that with some pictures of course!

Brrrrrrrrr! It's Cold in Here!

Exhaustion. It is now 4:00 p.m., and I have been awake since 3:00 am this morning. I have been on a two-hour shuttle ride, two planes, three airports, many security checkpoints, uncomfortable napping spots, and overpriced cab rides. As I am writing this blog, I am solely running on the caffeine from a double shot latte and a cup of coffee....and lots of sugar from candy.

So what have I been doing you may ask? Well I just arrived from the Evergreen State of Washington where I spent the weekend with the executive board members of Residence Hall Association (RHA) along with our advisor. We attended the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (PACURH) conference in Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. It's an annual conference for various college campuses in the Pacific Western region.

On Friday, we left San Diego at 2pm to fly into Sacramento for a layover and then flew into the Seattle airport. Then, we took a shuttle from Seattle to Bellingham which took almost three hours. So when we arrived on Friday night at 10:30 pm, we were so exhausted from traveling. We just wanted to check-in to our hotel, order some food, and get as much sleep as we can for the busy day ahead. On Saturday, we attended sessions where we learned about programming, leadership skills, communication skills, and networking with other residence halls. Later that evening, there were several events going on for the PACURH conference delegates such as a banquet, a dance, and a college feud (family feud college-style game) just to name a few.

It would be absolutely impossible for me to give you every detail of my trip so I'll let these photos give you an idea of what went on during the weekend!

What the Hay is Broomball?!?

Broomball: (n.) Broomball is like hockey but you don't wear skates, you wear sneakers on ice instead.

An RHA Classic! The Residence Hall Association (RHA) has been putting on Broomball for many semesters now. Being in exec board for RHA, I helped organize the event. RHA provided transportations (USD trams or carpools) to the ice skating rink in La Jolla. It was actually my first time to attend Broomball since I've always had some schedule conflict. Last week, it was held on a Thursday night at 10:00 p.m. Thursdays are my longest days of the week, so I was definitely looking forward to attending broomball to de-stress myself after a long day!

My Thursday schedule:

9:00-10:35 am - World Literature class

10:35-12:00 noon - Go to World Lit professor's office hours and library time to work on lab worksheet due at 2:30 pm

12:15-1:15 pm - AS Senate meeting

1:15-2:15 pm - Lunch and final changes to lab worksheet

2:30-6:30 pm- Anatomy and Physiology lab

6:30- 7:30 pm - Dinner

7:30-9:30 pm - went to PB this day to get Halloween costumes

10:00-12:00 am - BROOMBALL!

Broomball was such a great de-stressor. It was my first time playing it so I was still learning and trying to get the hang of it. As I was playing, I was not prepared for how intense this game gets! Everyone was so into it! We had 4 teams who all played against each other. We had about 60 - 70 people attend this event so it was definitely a success. I am looking forward to the next broomball next semester!

Halloween Spooktacular

I looooove Halloween! It's so fun dressing up and seeing all the funny, unique, crazy costumes that people come up with. I was dressed as a cat for Halloween. It was kind of a last minute plan. My friends and I went to Pacific Beach/PB which had a ton of halloween stores the night before to look around for costumes. On Oct. 30th, the Greek community along with other organizations on campus like Residence Hall Association, Wellness Center, and Multicultural Front organized an all-campus dance at USD's Sports Center. It was such a huge success! Tons of students ranging from freshmen to seniors, both greek and non-greek students, and it was just a great way to see the USD community get together and have fun!

The actual day of Halloween was soooo fun as well. The Student Life Pavilion (SLP) weekend brunch was specially themed for halloween. There were pastries and desserts shaped in bones, ghosts, and pumpkins and dyed black and orange to look really festive for Halloween! Several students also came to brunch in their costumes to show their Halloween spirit! Although I just wanted to have fun all day and celebrate one of my favorite days of the year, I spent the entire afternoon studying on my residence hall study lounge and doing homework! Gotta have some work time set aside for sure. My friends and I actually went trick-or-treating in La Jolla later that evening. We were all actually pretty stoked as we haven't gone trick-or-treating in YEARS! My friend from Connecticut was especially extremely excited for it as she shared that it was ILLEGAL to trick-or-treat in CT when you turn 15 (or 16) years old. We had fun being kids at heart once again, and we all definitely reminisced on our childhood trick-or-treating days.

First Semester is Halfway Over???

Wow, time definitely flies! I cannot believe it is almost the end of October! Sophomore year is AWESOME! My classes are all very interesting as well. This semester I am taking: Anatomy and Physiology lecture and lab, World Literature, Intro to Music, Social Statistics, and an Internship credit for tutoring at the local middle school. Midterms are FINALLY over, and now we can all chill for a bit.

Something that I always find relaxing is going to the beach. I absolutely love how the weather in San Diego still remains to be nice and warm at this time of the year! :) This semester, one of our friends who have been surfing for years has been helping us learn how to surf! A few weeks ago, we went to one of the fraternities' surf competition event at Pacific Beach. Here are some pictures!

As you have noticed from my other blogs, I am a woman of few words....I love photos! I definitely believe that a picture is worth a thousand words...So a video would be worth double that! Here's a video from the Sean Kingston & Milkman concert held HERE at USD to start of our Homecoming Weekend!! My friends and I were able to squeeze and push our way into FRONT ROW! YESSSSSS!! This is one of the few times, my five-foot size has become useful! This was definitely a great way to jump start USD's Homecoming Weekend! My friends and I had such an AMAZING time!!!

Fun in the Sun!

So what are some of the things you can do on a Sunday afternoon, you may ask? Well aside from having an amazing Sunday brunch at the new Student Life Pavilion (SLP), attending football/basketball/soccer games, surfing or laying out at the beach, and getting homework done at the library, organizations on campus put on events for students often. On October 11th, Residence Hall Association (RHA), an organization that I am very involved in, planned an event for residents on campus to take a break from all the homework and meet fellow residents on campus! We brought in free Subway, an inflatable obstacle course, frisbees, footballs, and a DJ at the Valley Field!

PRIDE is an alliance at the University of San Diego for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered queer and questioning students and their supporters. The organization hosted a Neon/80's dance at the Student Life Pavilion (SLP) 3rd floor courtyard on October 9th. It was definitely a fun and successful event! It was definitely a good turnout, and I saw most of my friends in their neon outfits! I'm definitely looking forward to many more social events that will be held in the new SLP!

The Residential Hall Association (RHA) Councils of Missions A/SAPS/San Buenaventura and Missions B hosted a Post Easter Egg Hunt event in the valley yesterday. The two councils placed plastic eggs with raffle tickets and candy around the courtyards between the Missions B buildings and around Mission Crossroads. It was a very fun and successful event. We had a good turnout, and everyone had a good time. The prizes were pretty sweet too. It ranged from $5 Jamba Juice and Fiji Yogurt giftcards to $10 iTunes and Starbucks giftcards to a $30 Target giftcard. Everyone basically left with a prize. Our next events for RHA will be next week which is the Earth Day Movie to celebrate the upcoming Earth Week and our traditional Missions B Waffle Wednesday.

Tomorrow will be the College Visiting Admit Day for prospective students. I will be helping out as a morning greeter and a lunch time mingler as a member of Ambassadors Club. I'm pretty stoked for that too. Those events are always fun. The San Diego The Rescue Kick Off Party and the White Flag Caravan Parade are also going on this weekend for the upcoming Invisible Children event called The Rescue. (If you're interested to know what it is, here's a link:(http://www.therescue.invisblechildren.com/) And lastly, the San Diego Earth Fair at Balboa Park is going on also. It's a pretty big event and attracts about 75,000 visitors annually. USD will provide trams for students all day to Balboa Park and back to campus on Sunday. It's gonna be a really busy weekend, but I'm way excited! :)

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter everyone! I'm back home in Monterey Bay enjoying my Easter break! We're on break from April 9th-13th. I'll be back to school on Tuesday just in time for a meeting at noon and a class at 4pm.

Last week, some members of USD Founders Club and I went to Julian, a historical gold-mining town by the Cuyamaca mountains and Lake Cuyumaca about an hour east of San Diego for a day retreat trip. . We did a lot of teambuilding activities and had such an amazing time there. I'm so glad I attended this day retreat because I got to meet new people and got closer to them instantly through this great bonding experience! We had an early start to our Saturday morning. We left USD at around 8:30 am and didn't get back to campus til 7:30 pm. Yes, it was an entire day's worth of both physical and mental activities on the rope course. It was exciting because it was a new experience since a lot of the activities we did were something I have never done before. Some of the activities included were: balancing on logs as a team, rock wall climbing, and going on the zip lines! A lot of the teambuilding tasks given to us seemed impossible at first, but through communication and team work, we were able to achieve victory! One task in particular was having to rearrange ourselves in order of our favorite pizza topping alphabetically without talking while balancing on a log! Personally, wall climbing was a challenge for me at first. I did it for the first time, and I definitely underestimated the level of difficulty of this activity! It was quite exhausting and tiring to pull myself up on the wall and not to mention the intimidating thought of heights and being so far from the ground. But with the support of my team and their cheering, enthusiasm, and encouragement, I reached the top of the wall and succeeded! I was so proud of my accomplishment of the day. After a long and exhausting day, we headed to the town of Julian for their famous apple pies with caramel and cinnamon ice cream on the side! What a great way to end our super amazing day! :)

Overnight Visit Program!

As a member of Ambassadors Club, I was a part of the overnight visit program held last Thursday, March 26th. It was my second time to host an overnighter as part of the Overnight Visit Program that we have for prospective students. After my International Relations class, I headed over to the University Center (UC) to meet with my guest for the night. All the hosts were waiting anxiously and were very excited to meet their assigned student. I met my guest who was from Tracy,CA, and we all headed to the Caf (Main Dining Room) for dinner. It was soo fun cuz we ate dinner with some of my friends and the prospective students that they were hosting for the night. After dinner, I took my guest back to my dorm room to drop off her bags, and got ready for the social event/dance that was planned for the program. The dance was fun! I think it was also great because the prospective students were able to meet more current USD students ranging from freshmen to seniors and also meet other prospective students who were part of the overnight program. We were dancing the night away until 10pm or so. The next day, my guest and I went to breakfast at the caf, and then she attended my classes for the day which were Sociology, Chemistry, and Public Speaking. After my last class, we said our goodbyes as she was headed out to the luncheon for the overnighters. I always find the Overnight Program such an incredible experience not only because I am able to share my experiences and life at USD, but also because I am able to meet so many cool people and get to know them. It's so crazy realizing how time flies by so fast! This was me a year ago. I was visiting colleges around this time and trying to make a decision on where the right fit was for me. Now I'm 2 months away from finishing my first year of college!

It's Good to be Back in My Second Home :)

Back in USD! Home Sweet Home! <3

The first week back from any break is usually the week where you have to transition from that "spring break mode" to "back-to-school mode." And yes, its can be hard specially waking up early for class in the morning again. Well that week's over, and now we're getting back to the normal spin of USD life.

I truly missed USD when I went back home to Monterey for spring break. I came back on campus on Sunday and was EXTREMELY ecstatic to see my friends!! I came in my dorm room and felt so at home! Then we went to Missions Cafe ordered our usual mint fro-yo (frozen yogurt) with Oreos (yum!) and began catching up with each other's stories! It was just so good to be back in my second home!! I never thought I would feel so attached to my school, but I feel so comfortable and at home here. I love the people....the school is gorgeous....and there's always something to do! :)

So far, so good! I think everyone has found their own momentum to their everyday schedule and finding time to do homework, work out and go to the gym, study, get involved, and even find time to eat. Welcome to the life of a college student! Haha. I never thought finding time to eat or finding time to work out would be a problem, but our daily schedules can get a little bit crazy. I think time management is definitely essential in college. I wish they offered time management classes back in high school! lol.

There's been several things going on campus these past few days. Last night, we had an Invicible Children film showing of the movie, "Rescue." One of the founders of Invisible Children was there as a special guest, and he talked about more upcoming projects and way to get involved to save the children soldiers in Uganda. Today, we have the Spring Alcala Bazaar where all the USD clubs and organizations on campus set up booths and talk about their group and what they do. We will also be having several prospective students for the Overnight Visit program later today. I'm excited to meet my guest. Some friends and I are planning on going to dinner with our guests and taking them to the basketball game against University of Portland tonight!

Ready for Second Semester!

The first two weeks of school have just been incredibly AMAZING! It was great seeing my friends back on campus, and I love my schedule for this semester. I'm taking Intro to Sociology, General Chemistry I, Gen Chem Lab, Public Speaking, Intro to Philosophy, and International Relations. I am also taking two recreation classes, Ballet and Wellness and Personal Fitness. The weekends have been fun as well. Last weekend, a couple of friends and I went to the Men's Basketball game against the University of San Francisco Dons. We got free shirts, and they were also giving away free food and Chipotle gift cards. The USD Toreros beat the USF Dons with a final score of 73-63. USD has won five straight games against USF. Holidays in USD!

I LOVE THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ON MY FLOOR!

Studying for finals can be so stressful, and I think it's pretty important to have a balance between work and play! A couple of the girls on my floor and I decided to liven up our floor and show our Christmas spirit by decorating our doors and putting up lights and a Christmas! We also gave out Secret Santa presents before everyone left for the winter break!

WINTER WONDERLAND!

Winter Wonderland - Just what USD students needed for a study break! I helped out and attended Winter Wonderland which was organized by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) on Dec. 14th (weekend before finals). I'm part of the Missions B RHA Council, and we were in charge of sledding! They brought in snow on campus! Everyone had fun sledding and having snowball fights! There were also hot cocoa and christmas cookies provided by other councils. The students also enjoyed the stocking making area. I think everyone made soooo many stocking for their roommates, parents, bestfriends in USD, bestfriends back home, and even their pets! Lol. It's definitely beginning to look like Christmas!
